Author Prechac,Jean de, (1647?-1720)
Title LA NOBLE VENITIENNE ou la Bassette Histoire Galante
PlacePub London
Publisher Claude Barbin
Date 1679
Illustrations
Description 123x72mm covers (detached/leather v.worn) Titlepage + (12p) + 127pp Lacks last blank? Dated the same year also by this publisher appeared in Paris & our copy is "suivant la copie de Paris" but it has been reset as the Paris copy collates differently. Here chez Claude Barvin, au Palais, sur le second Perron de la Sainte Chapelle this was probably published to satisfy the trade around the court. This copy carries a crowned head watermark in the paper. * By the 1660's the multivolume novelles had fallen out of favor and Prechac was in the vanguard of the short petits romans. An interest in love, psychological analysis, moral dilemmas and social constraints permeates these shorter works. Prechec wrote several among them "L'Illustre Parisienne, histoire galante et véritable" (1679) "Voyage de Fontainebleau" (1678) and this, rather scarcer, work. Here the introduction explains how to play La Bassette, a card game which it seems was the newest rage and was played for money between a banker and several punters, the players winning or losing according as cards turned up match those already exposed. Needs a rebind, contents neat and tight.
