Description 135x82mm red roan spined boards gilt rules and titling to spine (rebacked with most of old spine relaid, newer endpapers, spine darkened & gilt dulled) 191pp +18pp publisher's catalogue. Childish copying of title ono titlepage, the half title is present. Some signs of use and first leaf and K3 & 4 slightly tatty to edges without loss text except last 3 lines of K3 where two letters are lacking from edge of of 3 lines. One other corner torn away with similar loss. Some foxing - a well red copy. *The author contributed more than a dozen books to Darton's list, two before marriage, probably while she was teaching at Mr.Holland's Seminary for young ladies near Manchester. After her marriage she & her husband emigrated to America where they started a school in Philadelphia. Although her books were soon reprinted in America the first editions, especially those set in England, were still first brought out in England. The "ornaments" of this title are good manners and a "well-regulated mind". The first edition is quite rare and the book went on to become one of her most popular titles running into many editions and continuely in print to late Victorian times (Osborne Collection 267 Darton H770(1)).
