Frontis portrait + titlepage in ruled borders +[12]pp (letter, contents, errata) +141pp + final blank; 2nd Work frontis portrait + titlepage in ruled borders +[8]pp preface +[4]pp 3 additional titlepages + Argument (of Free-Holders) +326pp +[2]pp final blank, collated complete. Early ownerships F B Butler and Jane Wheler, London on free endpapers, all pages otherwise clean, crisp and without annotations. *First Work PATRIARCHA first published here posthumous (Wing F922, ESTC R29832); 2nd Work FREE-HOLDERS GRAND INQUEST 3rd edition (Wing F915, ESTC R215623). The 2nd Work's extra titlepages (all dated 1679) cover its 3 additional sections: Reflections Concerning the Original of Government, The Anarchy of a Limited or Mixed Monarchy, and An Advertisement to the Jury-Men of England, touching Witches. Each section is preceded by its own half-title. The 1st includes remarks on Aristotle's Politiques pp89-164, Mr. Hobs's Leviathan pp165-180, Mr. Milton against Salmasius pp181-196, and Grotius De Jure Belli & Pacis pp197-236; the 2nd section Mr. Hunton's Treatise of Monarchy pp237-292, and finally Touching Witches on [8]pp unnumbered + Diffence between an English and Hebrew Witch pp293-326. These form an important collection of political writings by Filmer, a notable proponent of the divine right of kings to wield supreme government authority, here first published together (with 2 portraits) in support of the restored monarchy of Charles II.
