Description Octavo blue cloth, ruled in black with magic symbols, spine titled in gilt (very faded, cloth darkened and slightly bubbled, tips bumped). Endpapers replaced, xii +13-325pp +[1]p colophon +[22]pp illustrated catalogue: "Very Important New Books, Special List for 1872". Some foxing and a few corner creases but clean and tight. *The "Magician's Own Book" and "The Secret Out" (both priced 4s.6d.) are described in a printed leaf from Hotten's catalogue of New Books, bound as pp[i-ii] before the frontispiece, as follows: "These Books are complete Cyclopaedias of Legerdemain. Under the title of Le Magicien des Salons, the first has long been a standard Magic Book with all French and German Professors of the Art. The tricks are described so carefully, with engravings to illustrate them, that anybody can easily learn how to perform them". This is the first London edition of The Magician's Own Book - later editions were published by Hotten's successor Chatto and Windus from 1873.
