Small octavo (16.5x11cm) near contemporary dark brown calf double ruled, red gilt spine label (hinges split at head, front hinge neatly repaired, tips worn). Lacks front blank, else collated complete, Titlepage + [17]pp prelims +568pp +[14]pp "Of the Universities of England" +[6]pp "How a man may iourney from any notable towne in England to the City of London" with distances in miles +[15]pp "The principall Fayres of England and Wales" +[7]pp Table & blanks. Printed in Black Letter with side-notes. Titlepage darkened and edges chipped but not affecting woodcut or print, prelims with rough edges and minor loss to corners, marginal damage to 3 other pages without loss of print, worm track in margin near end, several side/under-linings and other signs of use, but still neat and tight copy. Blank A8 has "William Pemberton his Booke Septem the 2 Anno 1649", Aug 30 1649 ownership and account notes on final blanks, coat of arms bookplate H. Chichester Hart on rear pastedown. *Stow's Abridgements went through many changes and updates in his lifetime. In the 1st posthumous edition 1607 Edmund Howes added gunpowder plot and trial of Guy Fawkes, in his 2nd the East India Company's foundation and items on Virginia, and here in the 3rd, some 40 additional pages giving a detailed account of events 1611-1618 (STC 2nd ed. 23332).
