Octavo blind-tooled calf (1555 date stamp on back cover) with gilt decorations, original spine on 7 cords (hinges starting to split but firmly held, spine gilt dull, corners bumped) 346pp +[51]pp inc. colophon (Excudebat Rob. Stephanus Typographus Regius Parisiis, Ann. M.D.XLIII. Idib. Iun.) Recently re-laid endpapers, old ownerships on titlepage (inc. "Carteret me habet 1572", perhaps Philippe de Carteret 1552-1594), water stain marks at fore-edge of first 35 and last 10pp, fore-edge of title neatly repaired over inscription dated 1714, few early neat underlinings and marginal notes, pages otherwise clean and crisp. Collates precisely with copy in Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, A.lat.c. 156. * First Latin edition of Dio Cassius and other Historiae Augustae Scriptores, original sources for history of Roman emperors from Trajan onwards.
