Folio (in 6s) contemporary blind-ruled sheepskin, spine on 6 raised cords and corners repaired in matching leather. Engraved Title (edges browned & fragile), Lacks printed Title (but supplied in facsimile), [8]pp (Dedication to Sir Phillip Herbert & his Wife, Printer to the Reader, Table of Authors Names) +977pp +[8]pp index. Printed cancel slip pasted over a few lines of text at p126, some pages mis-numbered, but collated complete except for missing printed titlepage. Edges browned from front and towards end of book, but pages otherwise clean and crisp throughout. Early ownership signature "John Snell" in top margin of p696. *This volume deals with history in a much more organised way than the earlier first volume (published 1613 STC 17936) of Milles' translation of Mexia's "Silva de Varia Leccion" (1543), which was probably based on later expanded Italian and French versions by Sansovino and others. The 1st & 2nd books deal with France, the next two with Switzerland, then Spain, Italy and the Romans, and Booke 4 "Of Nobility Politicall and Civill", a translation of Robert Glover's 1608 work in Latin (STC 11922), including illustrations of nobility & Knights of the Garter in their robes, and a splendid plate on p517 of King James I in Parliament. Finally in Booke 10 there are sections on Muscovy (Russia), Ireland & Norway, and the "New-found World" including the death of Columbus in 1586. The section on Venice, probably written by Sansovino, includes notes on surgical treatments developed by the author himself after 1536, when (p743) he was a "young Chirurgian" serving with the French army in Piedmont. The translator Thomas Milles (c.1550-1627) served the state in various capacities under Elizabeth and James I, his longest appointment being as "Customer" (chief customs officer) of Sandwich (STC 17936.5).
