132x82mm gilt dark brown roan-spined boards with marbled covers. Spine decoratively gilt and blind-stamped (edges lightly rubbed). All edges marbled. Frontispiece + tissue guard + engraved titlepage +174pp. Name to front free endpaper (Mary Ashworth) and a few pages with light foxing one leaf with small brown spot possibly from a candle. No loose or torn pages no marginalia or underlining. *Translated and adapted by Bertin from Lessons of Truth by Mrs. C. Mathews first published in 1802. This French version is not in Gumuchian which has only the English edition with fewer stories than here (additional are Mary et Caroline + Madame Dumont). The first 3 stories are in both English and French editions. They are: La Rose (ou histoire du Ellen Selwyn), Adelaide, ou les Epreuves du Courage, and Les deux Soeurs. Bertin was a prolific translator of early English children's books into French. A pretty binding & nice, detailed illustrations.
