Konstam - THE MAYPOLE Illustrated by G.A. Konstam E. Casella and N. Casella 1880
[J71178]

£18.00

Author: Konstam,G.A. and E. & N. Casella
Title: THE MAYPOLE Illustrated by G.A. Konstam E. Casella and N. Casella
PlacePub: London
Publisher: Thos. De La Rue & Co.
Date: 1880 approx
Illustrations: Color full page illustrations (8)+ sepia full page & text illustrations by G.A. Konstam, E.Casella and N.Casella.

Square octavo pictorial card covers (lower corner cut off (2x2cm) lower cover with some surface paper loss affecting book titles listed there but unusually the spine though rubbed is still well attached though split without loss for 3") 26pp. + illustrated publisher's catalogue of pens, diaries etc on back covers. *Osborne Collection p68 has matching title & says "resemblance to Kate Greenaway's work". De La Rue, Victorian printers of Bank of England's banknotes were known for the fine quality of their printing and these chomoliths are nice examples of their skill. In illustration and layout they are similar to Caldecott's toy books, but whereas the Caldecott series rose to 16 titles and were reprinted not only by Routledge but later by Warne, De La Rue only seems to have brought out about ten such titles and only a few other children's illustrated books. Despite the small flaws which do not affect the text or illustrations, this is a nice copy of a not common book with vivacious village scenes crowded with people & events.

This book was added to our catalogue on Monday 27 April, 2009.
