Description Large quarto near contemporary sprinkled calf gilt ruled with corner tools on 6 raised bands, both covers with gilt coat of arms (Society of Writers to the Signet), spine with green & gilt title label (tips worn/spine chipped down at both ends/hinges cracked and front cover loose with rear cover held by cords). All edges sprinkled red. Early MS shelfmarks to pastedown with coat of arms bookplate "Stuart of Dunnairn Esqr", vertical MS Writers to Signet ownership to gutter margin of titlepage. Title + dedication leaf to Charles II +[6]pp To Reader & Life of Author +366pp +[10]pp index & publisher's list. Endpapers browned and front free endpaper torn without loss, contents otherwise remarkably crisp and clean throughout. *This book was "Almost the first attempt to commence a Natural History survey of our country" (B.M. Natural History Catalogue). Planned as a county by county survey, the author only finished Oxford and Staffordshire before he died. This edition is the first to incorporate a brief biography of Robert Plot, and the book is important as being the first depiction of a dinosaur fossil in plate 8. It also depicts interesting medical anomalies, animals, plants, gardening layouts with fountains and grottos that make musical noises, architectural inovations etc. Each plate has a dedication with the recipient's coat of arms and cartouche inscription.
