Date 1740
Illustrations Woodcut frontispiece with death & a necromancer holding the mirror, below is a Dutch city + 22 half page woodcuts + each of 4 titlepages has a different figural woodcut + a few nice head- & tail-pieces and a nice initial capital.
Description Small octavo laced through full vellum, spine titled in ink (1" splits to foot of spine). Four Parts in one Volume. Frontis + printed titlepage + prelims all unnumbered but within the pagination 144pp; titlepage within pagination 112pp; [8]pp pictorial titlepage +contents +56pp; titlepage with poem on back +206pp. The woodcuts are charmingly primitive scenes of love, duels & murder and at least 5 of them have the figure of Death coming for the protagonist as in the earlier dances of death. Partly in verse, partly in dialogue and part in biblical texts the printer has used black letter, italic and ordinary typefaces, in double column, single column, double and single spacing and various sizes of type. Highly moral it also includes murder, love interest and mayham as well as edifying verse collected from many sources. Dutch text throughout. Some signs of use with minor edge browning and 2 gatherings a bit proud. *An amusing compilation of folk themes which made it quite popular in the 18th century (Waller 1173 for a later edition).
