Large octavo BINDING Relievo leather inner dentelles & reverses gilt, on bevelled boards designed by Owen Jones (edges browned/marked/head of spine & corners chipped but the fine stylized wing design is very distinct and the spine though darkened is not split except half centimeter at head) All Edges Gilt [55]pp. Yellow end-papers darkened at inner hinge & foxed/rear with watermark on back. Two inscriptions, one dated 1857 & a Victorian binders label of Edmonds & Remnants on rear endpapers. Some pages and 12 half titles printed in gilt. All illustrated pages are on thin card, the text pages printed on normal paper. One marginal tear without loss, some 5 pages with edge browning along lower margin never extending more than half a centimeter inwards. A few other signs of use but a fine tour de force of printing using over six colours to get the vibrant bird colouring. Rauri McLean seems to rate this the best of the series of 3 gift books "Some of the plates in Winged Thoughts are very fine indeed" (p94 and he includes illustrations of two pages from this book).
