Fine engraved Titlepage with allegorical figures (described in McKerrow & Ferguson, Title-page Borders used in England & Scotland 1485-1640 no. 132a) + woodcut initials throughout.
2 PARTS IN ONE Folio (20x28mm) worn & defective calf on original boards, later reback on 5 cords with remains of gilt title. Titlepage + +440 Book I +466 Book II +pp Index +pp errata +p blank (complete). Titlepage browned & frayed at edges with slight loss of outer printed rule (repaired & relaid), next 4 leaves edge-browned, light brown damp-stain in gutter of pp.1-94 and some later pages, occasional old ink stains & neat marginal comments notably on Index pages, otherwise crisp & clean. *Book I (up to year 1066) follows the Historia Major of Matthew Paris, Book II is an abridgement from the same work with additions, covering 1067-1307. The Historia Major was based on an earlier work by Roger of Wendover also known as "Flores Historiarum", probably based in turn on an earlier St. Albans chronicle - see Vaughan, Matthew Paris, Cambridge 1958 (signatures as in STC 17653a.3).
