Small quarto contemporary calf, rebacked & repaired with gilt title & date on spine, newer endpapers cut to show 1780 ownership inscription B[enjamin] Forster and his shelf mark (the antiquary Benjamin Forster 1736-1805). Bookplate HIS 114 Mount Street W. and 2 oval library stamps on endpapers, Benjamin & Thomas Forster inscriptions at top of engraved title which is slightly browned & spotted, earlier neat ownership Charles Laurence on printed titlepage. Some spotting, small marginal damp-stains on last 2 leaves and last with small tear at top not affecting text/back soiled, otherwise neat and crisp throughout. Collates + 48pp +267pp pp with errata. *First edition of Taylor's most influential work - "important, not as being the first or fullest statement of the principles of toleration, but as the most fruitful in its effects upon the English mind" (DNB).
