Title LA VIE DES VEUVES, ou les Devoirs et les Obligations des Veuves Chrestiennes.
PlacePub Paris
Publisher Francois-Andre Pralard fils 1st first edition
Date 1697
Illustrations Woodcut printer's mark of Fortuna standing on a winged globe holding a sail above her head and sailing on the ocean with other ships surrounded by emblematic items.
Description Duodecimo mottled calf on 5 raised bands compartments richly gilt with spine label, dentelles gilt (small chips to head and foot of spine and 2 small worm holes, corners worn) Titlepage +16pp preface +(6pp contents and privilege) +336pp. Narrow repair on back of titlepage where a name removed from blank area and minor worming to margin. One corner crease where page turned down and one page with paper fault to edge of margin (nowhere near printed area). *The difficult state of widowhood is recognized but widows should not mourn extravagantly nor follow a life of worldly pleasure. A second marriage is allowed but the author counsels strongly against it. Widows should live a life of solitude, practice good works and look to the education of their children. The author wrote similar books for Virgins, Priests, and married couples. Interesting insight into 17th century morals and women. A neat clean tight copy - not obviously read by widows.
