Description
Quarto contemporary calf on 5 raised bands but covers detached and worn [needs a rebind] Titlepage in red and black + [4p=dedication] +xliv [=Life of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus] +[28p=Preface] +123p +[12p] +439p[=Annoations] + [17p=Syllabus Locorum] +lxxi [=Annotations by Andre Dacier]. The titlepage begins with the first nine words in Greek characters. The Antonine text is is parallel Greek and Latin and preliminaries, life of the emperor and notes are in Latin. The frontis portrait is missing. This second edition is the first to have the additional section with Andre Dacier's [1651-1722] Notes and the Life of the emperor by George Stanhope [1660-1728]. The printed reference marginalia has alternate readings and parallels from other places. This edition not to be confused with the 1697 Utrecht Gataker edition which lacks the Stanhope & Dacier additions (Wing A4227). Titlepage has some marginal tears, is edge browned and has a neat quotation interlined and a few other early notes and numbers. There are a few early marginal stars, underlinings or attention marks but always in very thin neat lines. Some foxing and edge dusting/browning and ome gatherings are more browned but always readable and neat. *This was the authoritative work with the second edition being the preferred edition for over two centuries. Marcus Aurelius's fame as a philosopher rests on his Meditations which were probably jottings made while the emperor was on campaign in the 170's in a sort of commonplace book of musings, notable passages and extracts in no particular order. Gataker's commentary is more than 6 times as long as the original work and was an early classical work to be published in England with annotations. Price allows for a rebind of this worthy edition.
