Illustrations Printer's device of fine bird-headed serpent twined around arrow within shield on both titlepages + several 13 line figural initials + smaller foliated ones.
Description Folio 18th century tooled leather binding on 4 raised bands, compartments gilt (spine label chipped/head & foot of spine with some damage/lower cover long ago scuffed/tips worn but covers well attached and neat). Collation: Titlepage with Contents on back +[10pp index] +[38pp Life of Athanasius] +[2pp blank] +174 leaves [=348pp]; Titlepage of 2nd work +[18pp Canesius introduction +Index +Life of Pope Leo] + 162 leaves [=324pp] +[19pp corrections & commentary] +[1p blank]. Inscriptions on titlepage 1 with names including an Anglican Congregation, Benedictine Monastery at Lambspring, "L.W" etc. titlepage 2 with initials on blank back. All blank leaves seem to be present. A few neat marginalia. A nicely printed edition with side notes but no paragraphs in the text, each leaf divided by letters in the margin - A,B(recto), C,D(verso). The initials are all from a suite of cherubs playing musical instruements, riding, with dogs, birds, fighting etc. after Durer? *Both these Doctors of the Church were very orthodox in their teachings, Anthanasius expecially on the Incarnation and a consistent opponent of Arianism. Leo, the first Pope to be buried in St. Peter's came at a time of crisis for the Western church. His letters & sermons, many contained in this book, were wide ranging and important on the issues of the turbulent times. He was a strong supporter of papal supremacy, warned his flock to be on guard against heresies. Handsome edition in a decent binding.
