PlacePub London
Publisher Longman and Co.
Date 1855
Illustrations Hand colored Maps (3 on One folding sheet)
Description Folio red Victorian pebbled cloth (rebacked with part of old laid on) Half title + Title +2p[=contents] +iv[=Preface] 29p=[Facsimiles of the Anglo-Saxon script with tissue guards] +16pp [translation of Anglo-Saxon text] + 38p =[literal English translation of The description of Europe by King Alfred the Great ..] +7p[=Notes and Various Readings] +[1p =Additions and Corrections] These corrections have several inked in changes. This copy does not conform to either the copy in Cambridge Univ. or to the Durham copy in 3 major ways. Ours is much larger 37cm vs. their 29cm. Our publisher is listed ONLY as Longman, while the Durham copy is Longman but 1853 and the Cambridge is Longman, Brown, Green and Longmans, 1855. Ours has 4 Parts all separately paginated which totals 95pp. Both Durham & Cambridge are shorter by 60 and 30p respectively. The Durham copy mentions that it has [9] leaves of [anglo-saxon] facsimiles. There is no mention of Maps in the Cambridge or any other copies. Our copy has something strange about the V at the end of the date it looks to be an over printing of some other 2 or 3 digit number also at the foot of the corrections "Printed at the private press of the Rev. Dr. Giles Bampton, Oxfordshire. November 1854" This is John Allen Giles [of] Bampton in Oxfordshire whose 1855 correspondence with Joseph Bosworth is in the Bodleian. This may be a trial printing as Dr.Giles 1808-1884 was a historian, editor and translator.
