Description
Small octavo [158x92mm] contemporary ruled & blind tooled leather on 4 raised spine bands with gilt rules + red contrasting gilt spine label (tips very worn, hinges cracked but covers still attached). Frontis + Titlepage +[14pp=Dedication & contents] +176pp +143pp +[1p catal.] The frontis has a hole 10 x 3mm and fore-edge chips not affecting image and titlepage has small marginal hole not affecting text. The back of the first dedication page was insufficiently inked and with one corner so faint that a few words are nearly impossible to read. The second part has no titlepage, and begins anew with page 1 but the catchword is Chapter on M[8] and begins Chapter VIII with Aa showing that it does not require a half title. This second part lacks a small corner of Bb[6] affecting words on the last four lines. Minor edge browning and a very few marks but for its age in nice tight clean condition. *Quite scarce it last appeared at auction in 1991 (Swann). The first edition was 1636 and this first translation is by John Cruso. Rohan, from his experience as a French General, was qualified to comment on Caesar's battles and military tactics. He uses the lessons from legionary methods of fighting to point out applications to modern warfare and the art of war in general.
