Half page woodcut of Arms of Holy Roman Empire with medallions of 2 Emperors (repeated on p282)+ 3 woodcut portraits (one repeated) + 10 repeated tailpieces of triumphal procession + large cherub & 5 other figural intials.
Description
Folio near contemporary semi-limp full vellum laced in at spine with 2 ties (covers slightly marked). Interleaved inside covers with 2 wide vellum strips cut from a richly illuminated 15th century manuscript Latin Missal, probably English, with decorated initials in red & blue and musical notation. Some off-setting of the MS colors onto end-papers, which are slightly frayed at edges. Title-page in red and black with the armorial woodcut +(32pp) +315pp +(23pp=index & colophon with large portrait of Christian Egenolph). Slightly blotted early name & price of purchase on margin of title-page and 3 pages with early neat marginal notes in the same hand. Fore-edge ink manuscript Title (as books were often stored fore-edge outwards on the shelf at this time). Prick hole through cover and all pages to p18, there is no loss, 18th century bookplate of Christ Church Canterbury on back of title-page. Sidenotes and many small initials with animals - stork, owl etc. or floral decoration. Handsome typography in wide margined clean, white copy. *Legal constitution, judicial organisation & statutes of Germany under the Holy Roman Empire as established in 1548.
