2 volumes in One. Folio blindstamped pig on wooden boards, reverse bevelled, with 3 concentric floriated panels and central emblem of the Jesuits on 5 double-cord raised bands with 2 working clasps nice old (probably original) ink caligraphic title to spine (2" split to one hinge at foot with sm.repair/one clasp damaged but still closing/ some soiling/ 4 sm.worm holes to hinges but entirely sound) All edges blue. Engraved titlepage + [14pp]=dedication/approbations etc. 426pp +[24p]=index +[2pg]=large printers mark verso blank. Titlepage to Part I with large woodcut emblem of Jesuits in ornate frame with cupids + [10p]=preface =340pp +[26p=index & errata] +[2pp]=privilege verso blank. Titlepage has outer edge tatty and repaired on verso,with minor loss to architectural frame. Preliminaries with some fraying to fore-margin but no loss except to [13p] which has loss that was repaired and text completed in neat manuscript long ago. The verso has no text affected. Sl.fraying to last index leaf of part II and to Privilege leaf which is mounted on a stub and re-inserted. There is no loss of text. A neat tight copy of this valuable source book on the jesuits of early Brazil as it contains biographies of all the earliest Jesuits and references to J.Ramalho and other missionaries in a rolled pig binding with working clasps
