16mo newer roan blindtooled with red gilt lettered spine label. Titlepage +(13pp=dedications) +(1p blank) +(8pp=contents) +(7p=license and approbations) +(1p blank) +216pp Ownership Richard Wright to Titlepage some damp marks throughout, most but not all marginal. Two small areas of rubbing to Titlepage one causing a 3mm hole to a unprinted area of the page. Last page is edge frayed but nowhere near the printed area. A few corners turned down and a few creases and a few other signs of use. The original rear endpaper is glued to the new endpaper for 1cm along the gutter. It shows that Richard Loughnane Boytonwrath owned the book in 1825. The original author was Italian but seems to be unknown as the title calls him "incognito" however the British Library attributes the work to Lorenzo Scupoli also called Lorentino (or Laurentius) Scupolo. It was then translated into German by an unnamed translator and from there into Latin by Lorich. Still reprinted well into the 19th century this is an early edition of this Catholic guide to spiritual perfection in life.
