PlacePub Paris
Publisher Laurent D'Houry 1st edition
Date 1683
Illustrations Copperplate frontispiece of Queen Elizabeth + 2 further copperplates.
Description Duodecimo full roan gilt leather rebacked (tips worn) [24]pp +183pp + Advice to readers + Privilege. *This is supposedly a translation of the quite rare book by Robert Naunton FRAGMENTA REGALIA however that book, also in 12mo but rather smaller in size, is only 89 pages long. Pelletier in the preface admits that he has expanded the work (it here contains nearly twice the number of pages). Since we do not think that this edition calls for plates, and all three plates here are mounted on blank sheets and inserted, this is probaly a Grangerized copy. The frontis is of a gorgeously ruffed, bejewelled but definitely battle-axe lady, the next plate is of the Queen walking in the countryside with Parry holding a dagger in one hand and the Pope's absolution in the other titled "Parry not able to kill the Queen" - in the background is a scaffold with a man hanging with the legend "Deus vindex". The last plate is a portrait of Robert Dudley Earl of Leicester in ruff and armour and plumed hat.
