Description Small quarto 18th century calf on 4 raised bands gilt dentels (hinge leather split but held by cords/tips worn). Collation [44]of[52]pp +559pp +[26]of[28]pp of Table. Lacks Titlepage & Portrait & two further leaves of prelims, pp533/4 (ie ZZZ4) & most of the top three lines of Aaaa3, also 1 page of index and the final blank or publisher's list (facsimiles of missing leaves are laid in). Nice decorative name and date 1691/2 on margin of p126, a few marginal tears & signs of use. This is the 2nd edition but the first that was illustrated and in a larger format than the duodecimo first. The Epistle Dedicatory is signed John Bulwer +Laudatory Poems +Letter to the Author signed R. Mason and dated Apr.20, 1653. The prelims also contain a A list of authorities +Contents +Introduction followed by the text. *Rare as there were only two editions, the duodecimo unillustrated 1650 and this illustrated edition. Considered to be the EARLIEST book on tattooing and body mutilations. The book is a mixture of fact and fiction some from traveller's tales, some from early literature etc.
