Description
Folio contemporary pocked calf with corner ornaments and rules. 5 Raised bands with simple floral composite tool to compartments and rules (splitting to spine/ chipped to head and foot/tips worn). TP+(16pp)+436pp +(12p index) Bookplate of John Cannon with large woodcut of 16th century soldier firing a cannon, also name R.Jacuile on FEP. 1cm marginal paper fault to 2 successive leaves, 1 1cm tear without loss to margin of one page else a clean crisp copy. *Written at the Restoration from the Royalist point of view of the affairs of the Civil War in Great Britain including Scotland. It has a strange half title on the back of the Portrait which reads "History of the Church and State of Scotland The II. Part in Seven Books." The Memoirs are however complete with a Dedication dated 1673, a licence, a Preface, errata and contents page divided into 7 books. Text starts with Book 1 and ends with Finis at end of book 7 + an index. Wing mentions no book by Burnet on the History of Scotland and only one edition of these Memoires (although the University of Gottingen seems to have 2 issues of this edition). The British Library has only this edition and it collates with ours. A lovely copy (WING 5832).
