Description
153x95mm later green morocco gilt (tips rubbed) (12)166pgs rather narrow margins sometimes cropping page numbers & just affecting top line of TP & Dedication. Last two gatherings with some loss to lower corner margins sometimes affecting a few letters and on three pages affecting parts of a few lines. The paper is as usual rather thin & browned and beginning & end pages are sl.tatty but without touching text except as described above. Ownership Henry Jack on last page & on back of TP. Also Hetty has very faintly written in "Great men and great women do great things." *Wither poet and satirist spent several spells in prison for debt or for publishing without licence. He had a long quarrel with the Stationer's Company who refused to publish some of his work. So he had some books, possibly inc. this title, published abroad or clandestinely in England with no printer willing to put an imprint to the work. In this as in some other items he asserts he can foresee the coming calamities of England and he later avows that the troubles including the plague (which he wrote about) were foretold in his works. A rather fragile copy (WING 3192 quite scarce no copy at auction since 1987).
