Description 155x107mm red-brown cloth gilt lettered to cover and spine 2/- to foot of spine in gilt (cloth slightly bubbled and rubbed/tips worn with up to 7mm splits and head and foot of hinges). Titlepage +contents leaf +242pp +Notice re pirate editions and copyrights. Name to fly leaf and a few signs of use or foxings but no tears, no ink or pencil marks to text. An early English edition with publisher's list showing that it is #19th of a list of 20 American authors to which "new volumes will be added at frequent intervals". This copy is the cloth edition with a cheaper edition bound in a flexible cover also available. The book became more usually known as Good Wives in the late 1880s. Quite scarce.
