Octavo original tan cloth pictorial gilt to front blindstamped to rear cover in later slipcase (rebacked in green cloth all corners similarly overlaid). All Edges Gilt, Frontis + engraved titlepage +Printed title +iii-xpp +218pp +[8]pp publisher's booklist. Newer end papers with retained Ackermann's Sporting Library list to both pastedowns. One text leaf is lacking (pp89-90) else a few signs of use but LOVELY detailed hunting plates in bright fine coloration. This third edition has 6 more plates than the first edition. *Apperley had been Mytton’s neighbour in Shropshire. His task "was to write the life of a man who, while he was one of the most heroic sportsmen that ever lived, was also drunken, diseased and insane .. he performed the task with admirable judgment" (Camb. History of English & American Literature XIV).
