Trollope,Anthony - THE WEST INDIES AND THE SPANISH MAIN 1859
[V72051]

£95.00

Author: Trollope,Anthony (1815-1882)
Title: THE WEST INDIES AND THE SPANISH MAIN.
PlacePub: London
Publisher: Chapman & Hall (no edition but dated on titlepage year of first edition)
Date: 1859
Illustrations: Hand colored map of West Indies and northern part of South America.

Octavo red roan spined boards (leather mostly lacking but covers well attached) iv +395pp. Paper browned and 3 small tears without loss. *Based on Trollope's tour of the West Indies undertaken as a British Post Office official in 1858-9. The DNB entry on Trollope says that "Sir Rowland Hill .. Trollope's decided adversary in most things, has left it on record that Trollope's mission to the West Indies was fruitful in valuable results, and that his suggestions for the improvement of the packet services had the assent of nautical men. The expedition resulted in .. a highly entertaining book of travel, considered by the writer as the best of his work of this kind." It begins "I am beginning to write this book on board the brig ---, trading between Kingston, in Jamaica, and Cien Fuegos, on the southern coast of Cuba. At the present moment there is not a puff of wind .. It is now the 25th of January, 1859, and if I do not reach Cien Fuegos by the 28th, all this misery will have been in vain .." A rather worn copy in poor binding but probably the first edition, and complete.
