Author: Ross,Alexander (1591-1654)
Title: MYSTAGOGUS POETICUS, OR THE MUSES INTERPRETER: Explaining The Historical Mysteries, and mysticall Histories of the ancient Greek and Latine Poets. Here Apollo's Temple is again opened, the Muses Treasurers the third time discovered, and the Gardens of Par
PlacePub: London
Publisher: Joshua Kirton 4th edition corrected & enlarged
Date: 1653]

Small octavo newer spine with marbled boards (tips rubbed) [18]pp +418ppp +[32]pp A4 bound before A3 and its conjoint A5 bound before A6 in the preliminaries. The titlepage is mounted with loss to margins and the date has the middle two numbers unreadable as there is a small hole. However the edition statement -3rd edition dates it as 1653 with the 3 clearly present on our titlepage. Kirton seems to have published only the 3rd 1653 and 4th 1664, with only the 1653 edition mis-spelling Genealogy. The verso of the title seems to have had some old ink scribbles which partly show through but now that the page is mounted are not legible. This mounting page has a Westminster library reserve stock stamp & numbers with miniature library stamps to p105 & final page of index. Four pages with old marginal pen trials/notes, and 2-3 ink spots and a handsome fancy name Nm. Randall to foot of page 228. The laid paper is watermarked, possibly crown. A few pages are a bit cropped but no text affected tho'page numbers or marginal notes are touched in a few places. *Each of the heroes, Argonauts or gods is shortly described, followed by a much longer history of their deeds by "the Interpreter" (Ross) with the various guises or adventures according to the references of the books and authors in whose works they appeared. Thus for example Midas is shown by the side notes to figure in Ovid's Metamorphoses and other works with quotations given in Greek or Latin. Finally a Christian moral is sometimes added.
