Date: 1894
Illustrations: 35 full page chromolithographs including 2 full page frontispieces by D[avid] Estoppey (1862-1952), text includes some text illustrations.

Folio (435 x 325mm) beige cloth with large color & gilt illustration of bugler in mountain & lake scenery. Binding by Hug Frères & Co. Zurich. Lower cover with remnants of corner ties on beige bevelled boards (covers with scratches & paint chipping/damage to lower part of spine but still handsome). Note the text and plates were never meant to be bound in - this was to be used as a portfolio (Mappe) in which to keep them, the inside spine is thus finished in beige cloth with pastedowns of silver & beige patterned with Swiss Crosses. 73 pages + 35 plates printed one side only but LACKING "Capitaine de Genie, Pontonnier" There are two pictorial titles one captioned in French (this creased & repaired) one in German (good condition). Text pages unsewn & on thin paper & uncut, someone has carelessly torn apart the conjoint edges often tearing into the margin of the attached page. The text has other tears & marginal losses, some with previous repairs, but no text is lost. Each fascicule covers one part of the army (cavalry, artillery etc.) it has 7 half title with the various different authors named. These sections unsewn with very wide margins - perhaps printed thus so that they could be cut down binding into a book of a smaller size to accompany the plates. Illustrations are on heavier paper with embossed texture on chromolith side, 325x208mm with captions in French & German below. *Fine plates by Estoppey: large & striking portraits including mounted figures, shown with field guns, velocipedes etc.
