Octavo modern red crushed morocco, Top Edges Gilt, original upper cover bound in, iv +[2]pp +110pp +[12] leaves of hand-coloured plates. "A most valuable and important book for the sporting life of the period .. though containing only 12 plates, this first edition is more rare, and more valued higher than the second edition" (Tooley 66 cf Schwerdt I p.38). Three plates of this edition (2, 8 and 9) did not appear in the second edition. *Apperley had been Mytton’s neighbour in Shropshire. His task "was to write the life of a man who, while he was one of the most heroic sportsmen that ever lived, was also drunken, diseased and insane .. he performed the task with admirable judgment" (Camb. History of English & American Literature XIV).
