Contains Titlepage within double ruled border + (68pp) of preface with errata + 2nd identical titlepage -verso blank +(10p) additional Preface with same errata as on C12 + 1-312p Is sometimes found without the first 68p preface, and in another variant with catchword on p269 Ste- when it leaves out p270-4 which is an Appendix. In our copy the catch word is Appen- and the Appendix is present starting on 270. The signatures are thus correct & as usual in 12's. The Saint Augustine begins on p169. The first TP has small tears but only affecting the outer of the two ruled borders it also has some uniform tanning. There are some early underlinings or marginal annotations else clean and square. *Little is know of St.Vincent, his work being far better known than his life. The Commonitorium stresses the importance of tradition and commonly understood practice in scriptural exegesis. He is, thus, opposed to the doctrine of St. Augustine. The Etienne Baluze commentary notes apply only to the St.Vincent work and are considered by many to be the best of the 17th century's many translations and printings of Vincent de Lerins. The long first Preface deals with the French editions which tended to allow Papal supremacy in these controveries. Here combining the Vincent and Augustine controversialists' on early Catholic heresies in one abridged volume (WING V453).
