Three Volumes folio (foliated in 4s & 6s) 32x19cm. Full calf, raised bands with red contrasting leather labels (5 boards detached) leather covers and spines very worn with some loss; stitching of Vol.2 partly broken with some gatherings loose (without any loss or damage). Handsome & clear black-letter typography with printed side-notes throughout. English translation by Sir Harbottle Grimston, Croke's son-in-law, with some Latin and law-Fench text. Waterstaining throughout the volumes, varying from fairly heavy to very light; two marginal tears w/o loss, some old legal marginalia in pencil & in ink (the former could easily be erased but some is quite interesting). Tables of Cases and Indices to Legal Principles. *Sir George Croke (1560-1642) resisted Royal interference with the Courts, in the "Ship Money" tax case he spoke out boldly for Parliament's exclusive right to raise tax. Croke's "Reports" cover the period 1580-1640; Vol.3, which was published first, bears a fine Dedication to King Charles II (following the Restoration). *Though waterstained and showing signs of use by prior generations of lawyers, this copy is on strong crisp paper and worthy of professional binding repair.
