Sandford,Alyce L. - IN THE NURSERY ROOM with a foreword by P.B. Ballard, M.A. 1915
[A69485]

£8.50

Author: Sandford,Alyce L.
Title: IN THE NURSERY ROOM with a foreword by P.B. Ballard, M.A.
PlacePub: London
Publisher: James Nisbet & Co.
Date: 1915 according to the British Library
Illustrations: Photographs (11) of children at their activities in groups but never more than eight in a room.

Octavo pictorial cloth (tips rubbed) 106pp +[22p publisher's teaching titles]. Although according to the author Freedom and Liberty should be the main aim for the 3-5year olds that she includes in this book, the pictures show the most docile, seated quiet-looking children ever. There is no rushing around at "free play", and the day is structured with Scripture stories, hymns, the exercises include marching, dancing. There is drawing, modelling, singing and sleep time. There are doll games and both girls and boys have a doll to cuddle, crafts such as bead threading, paper weaving, finger plays and sand occupations. These are children from disadvantaged backgrounds and lunch is supplied but "we do not get sticky or greasy" no crumbs on the floor. But there are also no smiles on any of the children photographed. An interesting insight into the implementation of Lord Haldane's speech Easter 1913.
